Yes, Paul, they have already done that. It is now called Libre Office, and is just the old OpenOffice renamed. Development as a community based product will continue, and it will continue to be free.
The free SoftMaker offer, however, expires at the end of the month. You should also note that this “limited time free” offer is in reality a copy of their obsolete 2008 Version. Their current Office 2010 version is NOT free.

Yes - Thanks for passing this on. I imagined Oracle attempting this when he first acquired it from Sun, but since OpenOffice.org is somewhat/mostly community built, couldn't the community rename their code if necessary and continue developing?
