Hi Hans,

I sure would loved to have been there. I miss my old sea days very much.

I even miss the mid watch.

  DR,

I'm going to make you jealous.

I've just returned from a "deployment" on one of those pointy grey boats.

For 6 days last week I sailed as a guest on the USS Howard DDG-83 from Pearl to Sandy Eggo. Gotta report that this old Sailor was in 7th Heaven!

Below is a view from the fo'csle showing part of our battle group getting a drink from the tanker.

And, yes, there still were morse keys in the radio shack, but VERY dust covered!

    HB,

You need code practice the way Egyptian radio operators need extra weights for their Vibroplex because they cannot control their dots when sending messages to one of the finest Sparks our United States Navy has ever known. Our Navy met their match in "Matchine Gun" Matty of Suez Navigational Control Radio. I'm sure he was taught by some of the excellent British radio operators that ran the Suez a few decades before.

I'm sure that he was sure drinking that strong Egyptian coffee they serve that's as thick as syrup and served in tiny cups with grounds at the bottom - it's the only stuff I've ever tasted that is stronger than the coffee that kept the mid watch humming on one of our grey fleet.
