Indeed, it isn't.  It's one of a group of single letter abbreviations
such as R, for received, C, for correct or yes, N, for incorrect or
no, and several others I've forgotten.

These go back to the old telegraph days, I think, and some are still
used on voice, such as "Roger" and "That's a Charlie".
