I have heard that line before and while it sounds plausible at first
it fails the historical accuracy test. The mass is a Catholic
celebration. There were no Catholics during Christ's time. Christ
was Jewish.
Okay, so where did the term Christmas come from? I don't know and
doubt that it matters. What is important is to recognise it as an
annual celebration of Christ's birth. In fact, December 25th is most
likely not even his actual birth date but that has never kept
Christians from celebrating it anyway.
Merry Christmas
