I applaud WD8DAS on his logbook initiative. My logbook was, and has been since I was first licensed, one of the
most cherished things in my shack. About 35 years ago I began also entering data related to my ham operations but not required (in the traditional sense) in a station logbook. Every time I buy or sell of piece of gear I make a block entry on a line stating the item, the other party involved, their QTH and price. What an interesting walk down memory lane as I look back to the days when I sold a Johnson Ranger for $25. Sometimes painful, too. HI
Of course I enter station changes and repairs which, from an archival standpoint have proven most helpful when a problem reoccurs years later.
I also make private notes in the remarks section about the stations I work. I enter positive and, yes, negative things about the operator or the QSO. Right or wrong, sometimes I am feeling somewhat "selective" about answering a call. I also enter things like "doesn't keep a log." That way I know if we have a QSO I am going to be required to send the whole info package which is somewhat annoying, especially when you work the same station repeatedly.
I think my favorite use of the log is when a certain call sign rings a bell and I scramble to thumb through my very early logbooks and then can tell the station, "great to hear you again-we had QSO in 1967." What a conversation starter!
My hat is off to stations who still keep a paper log for a lot of reasons and, WD8DAS, I believe you're on the right track.
