WTOP FM has been an odd thing here. I listened to it many years ago, going
and coming from overseas, and then this time when I came back it was still
on. Suddenly, one day, (and I only hear it when driving) it wasnt WTOP
anymore. They "sold out" to the Washington Post and became WASHINGTON POST
RADIO. Which frankly, stunk. Then, within weeks, another station took hold
of the frequency. Then just a few weeks back, passing by the freq, there
they were again. The FM transmitter is in Warrenton Va. , where I once
lived, and can be easily heard here, about 45 miles away - but when they
went away, I couldnt hear their 2 or 3 AM transmitters, and felt as if old
friends had quit visiting. Thankfully they are back ( I hope for a long
time), and I can hear things like "whats happened to the solar cycle" coming
thru again.

Speaking of CW - (who was?) I heard someone ripping yesterday, and upon
close listening (S 0-1) there was OA4/HA1AG, almost to the point I couldnt
read him from the speed/along with the weak signal and QSB. He only IDd
every 10 or 15 QSOs or so, and was doing some CQs. Since I had no OA this
year I gave him a shot, and he responded on my second call. I wonder how
many just simply didnt try a contact, due his speed. There is a law in
Economics, which states that you can spend too much money and start getting
diminishing returns. CW is like that too.

Also, this weekend, I attended a Boy Scout Council Camporee. Twenty Three
different events were set up for the boys to enjoy; and passing by, I noted
one of the said "MORSE CODE",and, since I had already been over to the ham
radio tent, I wondered what this was all about. Getting close, I first
noted the two elderly gentlemen manning the booth, and then there on the
table were two sounders. Yep. Railroad retirees, and they were
demonstrated the original clicklity clack I used to hear when walking into
my local railroad terminal building. Good to see them out, showing
youngesters (and many oldsters as well) what communications used to be.
One of them said his railroad company had stopped using them completely in
61. I had no idea they were used that late, but should have, since I left
home in 59, and they were still in partial use then.
