Here is one of the best side swipers I've ever used. The secret of
this key is the ultra light wood finger piece - it is small and very
light wood. With light wood it doesn't chatter.

5570 KUNGSBACKA - FIRMA KUNGSIMPORT PADDLE:(20KB) Aluminum mechanism
on wood base with hacksaw blade armiture & wooden knob. 3 Suction cups
on bottom of base. Label reads: FIRMA KUNGSIMPORT, Box 257, 434 00,
KUNGSBACKA, Postgiro 9 10 99 Sweden. About 200 of these keys were made
in the late 1970s by Hank Svard a Swedish Radio Operator at the SAG
Goteburg Sweden shore station and his friend, Bengt-Arne Jockert /
SM6CKU. About 50 of them were sold to Americans. He writes that his
key business did not thrive so he had to keep on working at SAG. He
said "it was a thrill at the beginning of every watch to caress the
wooden handle. The ability to switch between sending very very slowly
or very very fast made you feel totally in command. You created your
own style and therefore you were greeted by name by the other ships
calling in". The suction cups were notorious for losing their suction
causing the key to suddenly and surprisingly drift across the
operating table.
I had someone make a heavy base for this. The key is excellent, but
the base needs weight - the guys who made the key used suction cups.
A heavy base and a non-skid pad works great.
A VibroKeyer with the dot/dash shorted is probably the best cootie key ever.
I have the following cootie keys:
Vibroplex VibroKeyer (modified knob and dot/dash contacts shorted)
Kungsbacka Swedish sideswiper (above)
Manhattan Electric side swiper prototype
Bunnell Double Speed key
The best are at the top, the worst are at the bottom. None are
terrible, but the VibroKeyer is the best, the Kungsbacka is a close
second.
What makes the VibroKeyer best is that it doesn't chatter and that you
can adjust either side for tension. With saw blade type, you only
adjust both sides equally.
