Well- given the state of the union, and finanacial facts, and if two units
were somewhat equal, it would behoove all of us to "buy local" wouldnt it?
Since the demise of Swan, Hallicrafters, Hammerlund, Colins, National, etc
etc, we havent had much choice beyond Japan. With two or three fairly new
US companies producing ham gear, we do seem to start having some choice
again, albeit less than the 50s and early 60s. The problem is that these
new people really dont seem to have the same quality, for "beginner" type
equipment. Isnt it odd that there are several fairly good linear amp
companies in the US now, and probably not only cheapaer than the Kencomsu
linear lines, but less expensive units ARE available. Finally, someone is
providing kits again, and they do seem to equate, price wise, with some of
the already-built units. Since Heathkit, we really havent had those, and
even the end lines of Heath seemd to have most parts/boards provided by the
Japanese. I havent looked, but dont many of these new "American" units also
have Japanese parts?
We just allowed the Japanese to beat us at our own game - and not paying
attention to our purchases today, will keep us out of it. Yes- me too-
with three Japanese made tranceivers sitting on the desk here. But, the
small amp, two tuners, etc, are AMERICAN. Wish I had the choice (price
wise) of the rigs too, but cant think about paying double or triple for
those.
