[CW] Absorption?

Joe,
During the past few months I haven't been listening on 40m during prime EU time, my sundown local time.
Later in the evening on my K1 bedside rig there has been evenings where there are excellent signals from across the pond on 40m, not much in the past couple of weeks however.
Tonite at about 0000z K4EWG in GA was near 50dB over on 7014 running a homebrew KW rig and a Vee Beam chatting with PY4MVR. Gave me some hope, but that needs to occur more than during enhanced sundown times. Nothing more exciting than a band full of whopping CW signals running at healthy speeds.
Hope to catch you on the band!
