Yesterday I decided I wanted to figure out what had happened to my old
ETM2b
keyer. Thats a German made keyer, made for maritime operations, which I
bought brand new in Hong Kong back in 1973, for about 60 bucks, and runs
on
4 AA batteries, has an on/off/speed knob, and a ratio knob. I used it to
make DXCC in Hong Kong, Venezuela, England, and finally back here in the
states - until about 3-4 years ago, when it suddenly stopped working
correctly. Seemed like it only wanted to send dits, and no dahs.
Since I have two rigs, I got tired of using just the straight key, and the
Vibroplex on the 706 here and have been looking for another Iambic paddle,
but havent found one to my monetary liking. I cleaned up the ETM2b, put
new
batteries in it, and wired up a new cable to fit between it and the 706,
and
lo and behold, there is NO problem. It keys dits and dahs just fine,
thank
you. So---- dont know why it quit to start with (yes- I did put new
batteries in it back then), but she is pumping out CW again. Now I have
to
learn to use it all over again. it sure is a different swing than the
Iambic.
Along with my Uncle Arthur Ritis, and mind wandering, I dont do so well
with the Vibroplex anymore and cant keep up the 25-30 wpm I used to run 24
hours a day on it, during contests, or 12 hour shifts standing guard and
passing traffic. Its certainly sent out a lot of dits over the years.
So there, talking about CW, Keyers, Paddles, and DX all in one email.
