Jim: It would be best to stick to MCW for code practice for the
following reasons:

Most FM radios PLL system is not stable enough for on-off carrier keying.
Most FM radios do not have a BFO or CW filter.

MCW is as easy as getting or building a cheap code practice oscillator and
feeding the audio into the microphone connector to transmit the keyed CW or
simply putting the oscillator speaker or headphone up to the two meter rigs
microphone to transmit MCW. The receiver of course can receive MCW so that
two way contacts can be made which is a lot of fun besides code practice.

An MCW system is cheap, available and very practical but probably best
not used
on repeaters (unless permission from owners/users is given) or used on busy
simplex frequencies and is not legal below 144.100 for sure.

I hope I am not being too simplistic or covering old comments. MCW
would be a great
starting place.

73 and good luck. Charlie, K0NG ..
