$344 with a few hours to go. Pretty good considering its original price 42
years ago, but nowhere near a record. (see below)

Of course it brings up the philosophical question of whether it should ever
be built! Real working AC-1s are rare enough, but unbuilt mint ones are much
rarer. Personally I'd be afraid to have the thing.

The ultimate unbuilt-kit-on-that-auction-place event was a couple of years
ago.

A complete, unbuilt, unopened Heath AT-1 showed up. Outer wrapping showed
shipping date of 1956. It had sat in a closet all those years, unopened, with the
dust of Benton Harbor still on it. Bidding was fierce and frequent.

Original new cost: $29.50

Final price: $5100.00

Not a typo. Five thousand one hundred US dollars.

Made the $6000+ SX-88 look like a bargain.

---

I have often wondered if anyone has ever gotten onto "Antiques Roadshow" with
classic ham rigs, parts, or keys. Would be interesting to see what their
experts thought of an unbuilt Heathkit or a minty Lionel J-36....
