Both CQD and SOS were used by Titanic (MGY). CQD was used first, then SOS as well. It was "new" to the Marconi operators even though it had been made the standard six years earlier.

btw, there was a ship within sight of Titanic for the whole tragedy - estimated to be 10 to 20 miles distant and generally thought to be the Californian. Her radio operator (Evans) had gone to bed shortly before Titanic hit the berg.

One of the officers of that ship had learned some Morse and used to listen in when things weren't busy and signals were good. He actually went into the shack and listened when the Titanic was calling for help.

But the Californian's receiver used a magnetic detector, which had to be wound up periodically, like
an old-time phonograph. The officer forgot to wind up the detector, and so heard nothing at all.

The call from the Titanic was CQD.
