Some have written back to say that the code speed is only 20 wpm! This is
incorrect because these are code groups. This is a transcription of the
recording. I had to have help on the last letter by using an audio program,
as it sounded like a Z but the program shows the character is an O. My ears
incorrectly copied the letter due to the rapid fade out of the sound file.

TE GANNIREBBE TORCULABAS MERCENNUME SPREZZEMMO INFOGNAMMO HOPLOMAQUE
ENCARREGAR CORNOMOZZO

Discounting the partial group at the start (TE), the eight ten-letter groups
are sent in 43.8 seconds, which would be the same as

8 groups 43.8 seconds
-------- =
x groups 60 seconds

(8*60)/43.8 = 10.96 groups in 60 seconds.

Since the groups are ten character groups this is 109.6 characters per
minute.

Since we now count groups as five letter groups, it would be 110/5 = wpm or
about 21 gpm.

But 21 gpm is 26.25 wpm as code groups are not based on English.

If you take the gpm (groups per minute) and multiply by 1.25 you get wpm.

Thus the 2nd class telegraph speed of 16 gpm = 20 wpm; the 1st class
telegraph code speed of 20 gpm = 20 wpm.

So the straight key sending on this recording is about 26 wpm.

Subject: [CW] High Speed Straight Key Sending - a recording

Several years ago on another Morse Code related list, I put out a request
for a recording of Morse Code sent with a hand key at speeds above 25 wpm.
Most of the replies through the reflector were: "That's impossible".

I countered with the fact that 1st class radiotelegraph commerical licenses
in Germany were required to send and receive 28 wpm by hand (by pencil and
by straight key).

Off Ted Wagner's web site (he gives a link to this page), I found yet
another recording from "The Early Days" of radio - this one from Victor
records and the Marconi company - from 1917 - sent with a "standard morse
key".

The link to the recording of this disk (and extract only) is here:

Anyone care to measure how fast this is?
