Then I heard "....END OF 45 WPM DE W1NJM....."

What memories.

Incidentally, W1NJM will make a gift of his morse sending equipment to
anyone who wishes to pick it up at his Newington, CT home.

The SOWP (of which I am a member) used to sponser code proficiency runs of
35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70 and 75 wpm. Once a month qualifying runs
were held and a certificate was issued for written copy - one minute solid
without error. I'd copy at the hower speeds but around 60 wpm, I just got
so tired typing that fast. I've heard that you need to type about twice
your code speed to be able to copy on a mill. This means if you can type 60
you can copy 30 on a mill. I would say this is comfortable but that you can
push your speed a bit for a short time, so the 60 wpm typist could copy 40
or so.

I copied W1NJM while at sea, and I also copied W1AW one night when I got
bored - it was a qualifying run - I looked at the copy and saw that I had
the one minute solid and sent it in.

In return I got a nice 45 wpm certificate - along with a note saying that
"we don't get many original certificates for 45 wpm, congratulations!".

What always happens to most people including myself, is my copy is very
solid, but I get fatigued and make errors - usually one or two letters -
about every minute. Even though I might be copying 98% accurate at 50 wpm,
even one letter every 250 letters will prevent a certificate! That is one
reason why it is so difficult to get a code practice certificate at higer
speeds - the number of correct characters goes up as the speed goes up - it
still is only one minute, but at 50 wpm, 5 letter words equals 250
characters. That is a lot of fast pounding on the MILL.

Me too - under good conditions.

Under good conditions, the ARRL recommended 5 ms rise/fall times are good to
60 wpm.

If 200 Hz is too narrow, tell BoD and FCC to make it 300 Hz or whatever.

As K0HB points out, 200 Hz effectively excludes almost all modes except
PSK31 and Morse/CW. Even 170 shift 60 wpm RTTY is too wide.

COOL!

One night, some years back, while puttering around the shack I came across
what I thought was W1AW sending code practice.

I left it on as background and continued what I was doing. But it took some
concentration on my part to head-copy what was being sent.

Then I heard "....END OF 45 WPM DE W1NJM....."
