[CW] bugs on SKN ??

The ARRL accepts bugs and cootie keys (anything non-electronic) as "straight
keys".
I think that this almost negates the existance of SKN.
Why have some on a key that will send 45 wpm in the trained hand when the
others are doing the up and down thing at maybe 20 - maybe 22 wpm - and with
great effort?
It doesn't make sense to me.
Getting on a straight key is a great leveler - which is what SKN was
supposed to be about - it is difficult for the high speed operator to send
18 wpm and copy the same.
I highly recommend - even for the just SKN - for the men and women reading
this message to grab the straight key and FEEL what it was like having a
shift of eight hours on one. The early telegraphers did that - and many of
the radio operators did that. In the UK for many years bugs and electronic
keys were FORBIDDEN on their radio circuits.
