While running some tests on 160m on my newly
constructed CFZ (270') at only 37' I was pleasantly
surprised to find a lot of contest activity there for
the NA contest this Saturday past Aug.6/05. I didn't
want to disturb the contesters so I went upband to see
what was taking place on SSB (I know heresy!)and had
some good reports from very friendly
operators......The big point here is that I was amazed
to hear activity on what I, and most, consider a
winter time band!!

Re: the possibly dire predictions for ham radio in
general and CW in particular, the eternal optimist in
me thinks that CW will survive the storm. I'm
currently wiring up an MCW device to use my handi on
2m and 17cm simplex QRGs. I have tentative contacts
set already in my area and hope some stateside ops
might consider this mode on VHF/UHF FM----its legal
here in Canada although some might find it disturbing.
Its amazing how much better the 'reach' is using MCW
over FM voice. The comments on here concerning
skulduggery in the U.S. commercial licensing procedure
is, to me, rather frightening and I hope it doesn't
take something catastrophic to have better 'policing'.
