NSS Washington Radio was closed in the middle '90s (1996?), and the lands
were turned over to be a wildlife refuge. It was in Alexandria, VA.

For those that remember the "CW Bandwidth" thread a few years ago - I
maintained that CW bandwidth was proportional to speed. Others strongly
disagreed with me.
Now I remember where I came into contact with this idea in the "real world"
in a way that I couldn't refute.
During the early to middle 1960s, NAA (Cutler, Maine) used to send CW and at
a speed of 12 wpm. (It might have been higher maybe 16 wpm) - but it was
still quite slow.
If the speed was exceeded the antenna would arc over because of the extreme
high Q of the short antenna.
NAA used a 17 mile long antenna strung between two mountains (If memory
still survives).
Here is a wonderful place to roam a bit and learn about radio:

Does anyone know of a web site about the old VLF CW station in Washington
state. Used a delta matched antenna strung between the tops of two
mountains. Was out there in early 1960's and could hear their CW on the BC
band from 20 miles away.
Understand the final tank coil was housed in its own building and the PA
tubes were so big that they could be opened up to replace components and
then pull a vacuum to put them back in service.
