European Sparks voice about 500 KHz amateur radio use.

The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 1
and various US
amateur long-wave groups are actively pursuing
experimental use of 500
kHz. The IARU also favors a worldwide Amateur Radio
band at 135.7 to
137.8 kHz and is seeking support for such an
allocation at World
Radiocommunication Conference 2007.

Our opinion is:

500 kHz has been the most important frequency in the
whole radio
communication and still in use,in which distress,
urgent and safety messages
were exchanged.

These messages have contributed to many successful
salvages.

Worldwide, day and night, this frequency was observed
by radio operators
on ships and coast-stations to save human life at sea.

Above that, this frequency should be a silent Memorial
to all who
safeguarded operations at sea and who lost their lives
in situations of
distress.

Also, this frequency saves as a Memorial to those who
were rescued.

Thus, we are not prepared to accept the use of
frequency 500 kHz by any
other party for other purposes.

We, as former radio officers, deny the additional
admittance to a
frequency that is important to all of us.
