I payed a little more for my J-38s, but I did try that trick.  Still
have the setup.  It works better as an iambic keyer than a side swiper. 
Trouble is I discovered I have no talent for iambic keying.  I tried
using it as a side swiper by connecting the two paddles together and
ended up with a pretty clunky action.  I finally built my own single
paddle side swiper.  Actually built two of them.  One a simple metal
blade between two contacts.  The second a more carefully constructed
device with real contacts and return springs.
