I guess, I just  want to hear "keep going and do your own thing"

and yes... I've tried and tested all the "modern" modes, just for the  fun
of it...and ok,  it works, but..

RSGB? ARRL?

Of course, building "apparatus" on the kitchen table on pocket money,
SWL/ing,  becoming proficient in the code and operating procedures is a
prerequisite.
Passing the "tests"  transmitting a clean signal and aspiring to a good fist
is surely the mark of any true Radio Amateur, no?
