Relax John,
I read your message and sense a bit of anxiety, some intimidation maybe
by faster ops. But I also sense a great desire to expand your skill. YOU
WILL GET THERE.

as so many responses have indicated, if you respond to a CQ that is way
above your copying level, it might be a little rude of you to expect them to
slow way down.... especially if that op only has a small amount of time to
get his or her cw fix in. That said, 98 percent of us were all slow ops at
one time and the other 2 percent or liars. So at least 98 percent of the cw
ops I have worked will QRS if asked, so ASK! If they dont then they fall
into that other 2 percent of lids and you dont want to work them anyway.

When you ask someone to QRS, you're not stating that you are infearior to
them or anything like that. You also dont need to go into any disortation as
to why you need them to slow down. Whatever the underlying reason is, qsb,
qrm, kids making noise in the shack, poor antennna or equipment, or
whatever, it all comes down to I need you to slow down if we are going to
have some communications in both directions. So dont feel bad or intimidated
just say QRS please.

I once call CQ at my usual 20-24 wpm and got a response from a person around
45wpm. I asked them to QRS. they came back with their call again still at
the same speed. I was able to get the callsign that time then I asked them
to "QRS to match my speed". They didn't and still came back with and answer
to my CQ at 45 plus wpm. I just kept on calling CQ and forgot about this
lid.

This hobby is suppose to be fun. dont let this anxiety/intimidation suck all
the fun out it for you.

Like I said earlier, U WILL GIT THERE!

You might try the "FISTS" group freqs. they even have a " Code Buddy
Program" and you dont have to be a fists member to take advantage of that
program.

HAVE FUN JOHN, 73 from Mark AA0YY

Subject: [CW] Morse Code for us slow pokes

Hello, my name is John, KC0KVD en37hf. Since it took me 5 tries to pass
the 5 WPM Code test, I thought I would stick with it and have some fun. And
Yes, I am having fun with CW. I have my Tech Plus License, and have been
enjoying greatly. I try to work 2 - meter ssb, 10 - meter, 40 - meter, and
80 - meter CW. At this time I want to concentrate on learning Morse code as
far as sending and receiving. I have to admit I am not the fastest at
receiving yet. But here is my point! Please folks, out there doing CW, like
me, I love it also!! You can talk all about it, but lets remember us folks
that get on the air and travel at that slower pace. Sometimes it frustrates
me, because others out there don't want to slow down to your speed, so they
run away. I know I am SLOW! I want to start somewhere! I have been reviewing
my Gordon West tapes that I purchased a year ago. I am trying to pick up my
receiving speed. I am not trying to send so fast that other hams think I am
an expert! I know there are more of us out there. I listen for "CQ" calls, I
try to answer the slower ones. But I don't hear the lower ones! I hate to
complain! I haven't been a ham operator for very long, but I am enjoying the
HECK out of this hobby! Enjoy the hobby, let others enjoy it with you. Give
people a chance! I try to get on the air after 9:00 p.m. daily Central Time
Zone. Thank you for your time, hope to hear you on the air! Lets all have
fun at a hobby that we refuse to let go! 73's from KC0KVD en37hf - John
