When I was in the Army, we had many reperf machines that made punched paper
tapes. The "chad" produced by the punching (have you ever heard of "chad"
before?) collected in a little bin. Once I took a small handful of the chad
and asked a Sergeant if it was possible to tell what was said by looking at
what was punched out. He said, "Sure it is!" I tossed down my handful onto
the desk and asked, "What does this say?"

He was amused. Lucky he wasn't a lieutanant.

Many people can pick up their callsign, or RYRYRY or even CQ with their
ears, I've never seen a person copy by ear, but I've heard about it. I know
people who have learned to recognize their callsigns and who have been able
to read the holes in the paper tape.

Backspace and letter out!

Seems to me it would be more practical to do that in baudot.

Wonder if anyone ever learnt to copy baudot by ear, like cw?
