David, you are 100% right......now, with a little exposure, its pretty
easy to copy "THE QUICK BROWN FOX, etc..... RY's. or more correctly
"revs", sound like the Lone Ranger theme song, Incidentally, speed does
make a difference as to the pleasantness of the sound, as a 60WPM
printer sounds "neat" while 100 WPM always sounds like the printer and
associated equipment are tearing themselves apart.......
and various bits of equipment used to secure communications had/have
their particular "signature sound" that cant be mistaken and one can
pretty much identify the equipment by the characteristic sound thereof,
even if you can't read the tfic. ... "LTRS" and "FIGS" are common enough
to pick up by osmosis, as are the combination "CR CR LF" ( we were
always taught to use two "CR's" to ensure that those with sticky
printers wouldn't print garbage).......

Learning to read punched tape is just like learning the code, or
learning to read, after one has done it enough, it becomes second
nature. It used to be mandatory in RM "A" school, becaure there were a
heck of a lot of non-typing reperfs floating around, and it sure was
nice to be able to route messages correctly///

Actually reading Baudot from sound, off air,, as one would read CW, is
an entirely different animal, I've never seen anyone do it, can't do it
myself ( nor would I bother to try) as that what's the greeenkeys are
all about --hi-- This doesn't mean that nobody has ever been able to do
it, I have just never known anyone who could....
