   When you have 8 wires sending a binary code from a switch to select, phone 
circuits for instance, to leave out "all wires low" would be throwing away one
circuit, 255 would be available instead of 256.
   We (in America at least) normally convert the numbers for the telephone 
operator by adding one.  The first circuit is therefore labeled 1 instead of 0.
   The first event is always event 0, but we call it event 1.
   The repair man must know where that change is occurring or he will get things 
fouled up.
