I wonder if the @ symbol didn't originate as a variation of the French word
"�" which means "at/to"? They just wrapped the "accent grave" mark
completely around the letter.
I believe the French language has a special morse character for "�" (I don't
recall what it is) but most ops just send the letter "a" without the accent,
just as it is written without the accent mark in upper case. Maybe the
special French morse character would be appropriate for "@", but "at" seems
to do the job.
