Two correct answers: From Greg Moore and Tom French!

The thumb piece was called either a "button" - which is the word that both
of them came up with - or a knob - which I believe is the more common.

The finger piece is called a "paddle" - which is the one I thought no one
would get!

On the Vibroplex the finger piece is like a hand key knob - and like a door
knob, the thumb piece looks just like a little paddle that you could paddle
your canoe with.

McElroy, who was a telegrapher, referred to the "thumb
paddle" and the "dash button."

OK, the "thumb piece" was the "button" and the "finger piece" was the
"paddle".

Now, back in the '60s when my Lightning Bug slid off the table at sea,
(NO, I wasn't transmitting at the time) and busted the finger piece, I
removed both, and made up a large paddle out of a piece of discarded
plexiglas. That makeshift paddle was SO comfortable, I kept it with the
key all these years, used it happily, and only removed it (actually
Vibroplex did, and returned it to me) when I had the bug completely
restored last year.
