Its funny. Back when I was a Novice on the bands, most of the people I spoke
with were lots older than me. As I turned to my 30s, it was the same. And in
my 40s too. I still run across the ocassinal young op, just like I did then.
I have never understood the attitude that so many have that hams are getting
older. They have always been older.

If you want to talk to younger people on the bands, get out there and recruit
some. There are hundreds of thousands of Scouts, 4H clubs, YMCA/YWCA, church
groups, etc. who are just acheing to have new projects set up to help in
their programs. The easier requirments, the easier the test, and the easier it is
to teach them. I would almost best that 70 or more percent of those
complaing about the ageing of ham radio have never recruited or taught a youth group
what ham radio is all about.

Yeah, I notice how the folk at the ham club are older than me, and Im no
spring chicken. What has your club done to encourage youngsters? Are there
contstant on-going classes, field days, fox hunts, simple and inexpensive projects
for qrp or cw keyers? Or, do you go in just to find a bunch of old men,
talking over "what-was"?
Get all those old men active. Ask them to provide guidance to a youngster.
WOW, how much experience is going to disappear when they go SK, without
passing it on. THAT would be sad.
