I disagree wtih this line of thinking. It ain't over till it's over.
The last time ARRL did a real, comprehensive survey was 1975. The 1996 survey
was very limited and the questions were not well constructed.
The BoD is in an unenviable position because no matter what they do, a lot of
folks will be really ticked off.
So I say this: If it's input they want, then we should give it to 'em. Write
up a concise, calm, clear, reasoned paper supporting what you want and send it
to your director. In fact, don;t just send it to your director, send it to
your vice-director, all of the other directors and vice directors, the ARRL
president, CEO, etc. Email makes it easy.
I think we should also consider alternatives. Like making the bottom X kHz of
each HF band CW only, and not widening the 'phone subbands. Beefing up the
written tests with more questions, a return to basics, and a different marking
system so that you have to get a certain number of questions in each category
right to pass. Etc.
I've already had email exchanges with some of the HQ folks and I'm convinced
they really do want input. So let's give 'em some! You can be sure the other
side will.
