I wrote to Mark N2MD (formerly KA2ORK/J37) the college kid
(medical student) in Grenada who keep the British and the
world informed during the Grenada conflict and asked him
about the spoon story.
Below is his response.

Hi Bill,
Nice to meet you.
Yes, in fact I did not have a keyer and built it when I thought I may need
to operate somewhat "covertly" after I learned of the Coup.
It was constructed simply of an old spoon that I bent, a nail and some wire
all mounted to a block of wood! I believe I only used it for one or two
contacts but the first one was with N2DRA, Steve in Oct. 1983.
My radio was a Swan 500CX, Shure CM17L desk mic and a B&W 5 band trap dipole
Unfortunately, I have no PICS to show. I was only able to salvage the Swan
power supply and mic which I still have!
I have collecting tapes from hams that were made of my transmissions over
those few days.
