Hi all:
It is hard for some folks, that had no trouble learning cw to realize
everyone can not learn the skills of Morse code in one year, with no help,
and no idea how or where to acquire these skills.
I started learning Morse code in 1956. I learned it visually.
After five 2 hour lessons I passed the 5 wpm novice test, which at
the time did not include any numbers punctuation "Q" signals or
abbreviations (in 1973) with a score of 100%, this did NOT equipped
me with sufficient skills to copy W1AW.
I could copy a letter or two here and there, but stuff I didn't
understand kept throwing me off.
I have a friend that built a receiver (in the 1920's) and listening
to it he learned Morse code. (this was before HAMs used 'phone)
I COULD NOT DO THIS. Many can not do this.
It is hard for some folks, that had no trouble learning cw to realize
everyone can not learn the skills of Morse code with nothing more than
10 tons of hard work.
You worked hard and learned Morse code, after 20 years of hard work
I couldn't copy any W1AW. I finally found HELP, I can copy W1AW at
20 wpm now.
My number one hobby has always been HAM Radio. My only interest
has always been cw!
I COULD NOT learn it by myself, MANY can not, they NEED OUR HELP
I asked dozens of HAMS for help before I found a HAM club that
would help me*, it was very easy, one tenth as hard as I struggled
with no idea what to do or how to do it.
The: "If you had put as much effort into learning the code"
attitude is keeping many cw operators from teaching cw to our
newbees that need HELP.
Do you get it yet, everyone is NOT just like you, sometimes
it takes MORE than hard work, for some people.
* I have offered help to dozens of new HAMs, few have taken it.
> Ron, If you had put as much effort into learning the code, by listening
> to W1AW, or Code tapes or whatever, as you put into making excuses about
> why you couldn't, you'd be at 35 wpm today.
