Well, I think I noticed a slight bit of hostility concerning my post =
about the G4FON CW Trainer update?
Golly Danny, if you have been using something similar to the Koch method =
for 40 years, it wouldn't surprise me if it had its' roots in Koch!
Briefly, Koch was a Geman psychologist who did what is still considered =
today as the definative study of how individuals learn the Morse code. =
He did extensive testing and then published his findings and =
recomendations in 1937.
Unlike the Farnsworth method (which also is terrific) the code is best =
learned at somewhat of a high speed, like 20 wpm for example. There are =
no extra spaces between letters as in Farnsworth.
With Koch, it doesn't matter if you ever use words for practice. If you =
go thru all of the letters and numbers in random order groups, by the =
time you have them all down pat you'll "fall asleep" with regular =
language. Morse is that difficult to learn anyway...just takes patience =
and practice.
The Koch method turned out much better code ops for the Germans in WW11 =
than the Americans did. The Americans were happy if a student =
"graduated" with a speed of 18-20 wpm. Of course, we were loosing the =
war at the time! It was not uncommon for German ops to scoot along at =
30-35 wpm.
A retired army colonel friend of mine was a communications guy who =
learned the code at Ft. Devon, Mass, and came out of it at just 18-19 =
wpm. .And that was in 1965
Of course hams did much better.
Anyway, my point was only to state that a new version of a very fine =
program is now available for those who have no elmer or wish to learn =
the code by themselves.
I think it is safe to say that any method works in learning, some are =
just better than others, and some indidviduals learn better with one =
method as opposed to another.
If you've been teaching people for 40 years, you surely are dedicated =
and without a doubt have been doing a bang up job. I wish ham radio had =
more like you.
