Here is a message that Marshall Emm asked me to post concerning the JJ38.
I agree with him about the J-38's being a "Triumph" syle key - and since he
sells both Nye and Ameco, he knows better than I do about those keys.
At least, I got the part right about the JJ38 having only silver plated
contacts and ball bearings.
I had remembered that the JJ38 base was hollow brass. Since I don't have
one to look at, I can't say for sure, but I remember the base being bent
downward so that while it appeared to be thick was only of thin metal
forming a shell. I guess it could be called a "hollow shell" instead of
hollow. Perhaps Marshall can clarify this.

Hi, David--
Would you mind posting this on the list, please? I seem to have lost my
"privileges" with qth. net. In an effort to reduce spam, they block messages
where they can't "ping" the sending system. Since my cable modem address
shows up on messages, but can't be "pinged," I can't post. I can't even
write to them to complain! Thanks... 73 DE Marshall, N1FN
David said-- The J-38 style endures today in the keys of Bill Nye of Nye-
Viking and they sell for $50.00 in a similarly equipped model<<
Just for the record, I think David is referring to the "Triumph" style which
goes back to late 19th century. The Nye oval-based Speed-X keys were
introduced by Les Logan in the 1930's (the same bases for the current
Speed-X keys are cast in the original molds).
Also the Japanese "ball bearing key" sold as the Ameco K-4 is not made from
hollow brass but is brass-plated zinc. The contacts are still silver-plated.
