Not so anymore Gary!
On 31 January 1999 the Global Marine Distress and Signaling - a non-morse
system - using Digital Sequential Calling (DSC) and Satellites, Comsat,
COPSAS and others replaced Wireless Telegraphy for the most part in the
Maritime Service.
It is NOW very rare to have CW stations.
I have only heard IAR and according to my sources CLA no longer is sending
his Navigational Warnings on 500 kHz and has not been heard on HF for
several months - I believe they went off the air about May 2002.
Also gone - is TAH in Turkey, LZW in Bulgaria and SPE in Poland. Also I
haven't heard Baharain and the others in the Middle East who were also on
last year.
Progress! I suspect IAR will be the last station - they are still on - in
reverance to Italian born Marconi.
