In fact, there may be more hams on CW now than back in the '50s and '60s, 
simply because there are more hams now.

Participation in CW contests is up, while participation in 'phone contests is 
flat. On FD this year, several groups I know reported more CW than phone 
contacts due to poor conditions, even though they had more transmitters devoted to 
'phone than CW.
