I am happy you don't live in Homestead Florida, for if you did you
couldn't say: "you never once lost all of our communication capabilities."
I talked to riggers that ran down there just after Andrew moved out,
I looked at their photos, no tower standing had one antenna or one run
of transmission line, just a foot or two at an occasional line clamp.
Earth quakes are common in the West (of the US) earth quakes in the
East are very sever, a Richter 5 earth quake centered in Missouri rang
church bells in Boston. (50 or 75 years ago)
How will your communication systems work after a Richter 9 quake
100 miles from your city? What you say about CW not having enough
operators to replace your fancy systems is completely true, but
when you can't get a message through to the governor of your state
with everything you have, ANY two gud CW operators will be able to.
< In 27 years working for a major police dept we never once lost all of
our communication capabilities. We sometimes lost a part of it but
never did all of our systems go down. Today its even better with cars
loaded with radio, cell phones, computers etc. >
