I've been helping ON4UN edit his new edition of Low-Band DXing.
Part of his book deals with the results of a survey returned by ~300 active
low-band DXers (excerpts follow regarding mode usage):

***********************************************************************************
"If we look at the split for stations having achieved high DXCC scores
(>275 countries on 40m, >250 on 80m and >225 countries on 160m) the
CW preference becomes even more pronounced. In this category,
averaged over the 3 low bands, 33% work CW 90 % of the time or more
and on 160m 70% of the stations quoted they work CW at least 90% of
the time.

The reasons for this CW/SSB split are obvious: CW is by far the most
efficient mode when it comes to dealing with weak signals under marginal
conditions."
************************************************************************************

Further evidence of the effectiveness of CW on the low bands can
be seen in the predominance of higher CW scores in contests like the
CQ WW, ARRL DX and CQ 160 Contests, which have identical rules for
both modes and are held at similar times of the year. The opposite case
is true for 10-20 meters where SSB scores are consistently higher.
