[CW] opinions:

I've been using a 706MkII (not a G) for a number of years now, about 90% CW.
I certainly don't regret picking up that radio. The CW filters cost half
what they do for the 718, so it comes out to be the same money, but a lot
nicer radio.

It does use relays for the TR, but you can set the delay down to almost
nothing, and once you get over hearing the relays, which takes a few weeks,
it feels just like "real" QSK.

The radio does have about a zillion relays in it, so if you're shy of them,
that might be a problem for you. Mine has gotten a lot of use and abuse,
and went back to Icom a couple months back, but for a CPU problem, not a
relay. Not really so bad after around 5 years of pretty hard use. (It was
probably disappointed in me because I've been getting on phone nets a little
more often lately - don't tell anyone! Before this winter, it had been
almost 2 years since the radio had to make SSB.)

If you can find a way to use one for a little bit, I would suggest it. The
radio does have lots of features, and some of them are likely to be of
interest to you. I, for one, like the CW-R function that lets me exactly
zero beat the other station, and the scratchpad for when I'm chasing DX.

The radio is a pain on 2MFM, although the issues have been eased some on the
G. But if you intend to use it on 2 meters, or 440, keep in mind that it's
not really practical to set it up in the field. You need to pre-program
your FM channels. The menus and such make sense on HF, but they are just
plain illogical on FM.

I'm seeking opinions on the Icom 706 Mk II G radio for use mainly on CW. In
the past I've been a die hard QRQ CW Ten Tec sort of a person, if that helps
as a basis for comparison.
