Some years ago when "tall ships" from all over the world sailed to Boston
Harbor, I had thought these were reproductions and maybe a few surviving
relics of the era when "wind was king", owned by corporations and/or wealthy
enthusiasts. I later found out that most of those ships were fairly new,
and had been commissioned by navies all over the world, including our own,
for officer training. Evidently the Navy considers knowledge of sailing
vessels so fundamental to naval operation even with todays technology, that
it is important to spend millions of dollars to keep these ships in their
fleets for training purposes.
I wonder if any of those naval officer candidates constantly complain about
having to learn that "obsolete" technology.
