I send with every type of key that I know about:
Hand Pump (I use a Marconi 365EZ ship key), Semi-Automatic (I use a
McElroy semi), Iambic (I use a WBL V22L), Cootie (homebrew).
I try to use the Iambic method of sending - Mode A - which I found that
the commercial operators preferred - so I learned that - and I like that. I
find it has less falsing - due to no extra dot at the end if I don't get the
timing right.
But I disagree about the counting of motions - isn't a "squeeze" one
action and not two? Isn't a release of a squeeze one action or command
and not two?
I agree that there are two motions that are being done, but there is one
action. Just as when we articulate the word: Ah! - there are many
motions involved in that action and that the motions have a pattern
which they must follow, but there is only one "command" to act.
In the beginning when we were learning to walk, we signaled our legs
and feet to balance, but these things are (mostly) automatic now. I say
to my legs - get up, and they take the proper action.
I would suggest that there are different types of embraces that must be
given the fingerpieces of a dual lever paddle to get the right response,
but this is not different to everyday life when we must embrace people
differently - or not at all - to communicate what is needed at the moment.
Incidentally - when I send with the cootie, I start the exchange with the
fingers, and alternate finger/thumb for the entire exchange. I get
confused if I start each word with the finger but I have found that it is
better to just go LRLRLRLR - especially because it leads to "forgetting"
of the method and concentrating on the beauty of the morse!
Which after all is what this should be all about!
