Flood Watch
323 am PDT Thu Jul 31 2003

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for this
afternoon and evening for the following counties

In western Nevada
     Douglas...Mineral and southern Lyon

In eastern California
     Mono and alpine

A very moist and unstable air mass will create favorable conditions
for heavy rain and possible flash flooding this afternoon and
evening across the watch area. Showers and thunderstorms will begin
later this morning. A weak upper level disturbance will strengthen
the showers and thunderstorms by this afternoon. Locally heavy
showers have the potential to drop over one-half inch of rain in
less than 15 minutes.

Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the evening before
dissipating overnight.

Hikers and campers should avoid dry stream beds and washes. Stay
away from narrow canyons where flood waters can become killers.
Flash floods can occur many miles from thunderstorms. Be ready to
move to higher ground if flooding is observed or a warning is issued.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flash floods.

Expires:311630 gmt
