Special Weather Statement
530 am PST Tue Jan 21 2003
...Wet and windy conditions to return to the northern Sierra and
extreme northwest Nevada Wednesday...
The high pressure ridge that has protected the western states from
Pacific storms has weakened. The first system to reach the area is
very weak and will rush across the northern Sierra this morning with
only light precipitation and snow levels above 7000 feet. A few
light showers or sprinkles may spread across western Nevada before
the system continues east by this afternoon.
A second stronger Pacific cold front is expected to reach the Sierra
and western Nevada Wednesday. This system will bring strong winds
with gusts to around 45 mph to northeast California and extreme
western Nevada while gusts over 80 mph are possible over the ridges
of greater Tahoe. Locally heavy precipitation will spread from
northeast California down the Sierra to Mono County during the day.
Snow levels are expected to be relatively high but lowering a
little as the precipitation decreases toward evening. Snowfall
accumulations of 6-12 inches above 7000 feet around Tahoe and 3-6
inches over the Sierra above 7500 feet in Mono County are possible
by Wednesday evening.
A broad ridge rebuilds for the weekend with some clouds at times as
Pacific systems brush by mainly to the north of the Tahoe area.
