1. Our monthly station check at the Red Cross will be Thursday, January 30
from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. Anyone interested is invited to come to the
Chapter House that evening and help test the equipment there while also
gaining hands-on experience in its operation so that you are familiar with
it should you be called upon to operate the station during an
emergency. We are conducting this month's check a little earlier in the
evening than normal - this is due to the fact that this check will be
occurring on the same night that Bruce Wade and Dick Flanagan will be
speaking up at Channel 5. We will pull the plug at the Red Cross no later
than 6:30 to give us time to make it to that presentation. Any free time
during the station check will be sent discussing message traffic handling,
leading into item number 3 (below).
2. The SNARS sponsored VE team will conduct amateur radio licensing exams
on Saturday, February 15. The location for the exams will be the V.A.
Medical Center in Reno, 1000 Locust Street. This is new location for the
SNARS VE exams - the facilities at the V.A. are roomier than those at Sears
and will more comfortably accommodate the exams. Exams will be administered
between 9 A.M. and Noon (ending sooner if all applicants are finished). A
map showing routes to the V.A. Medical Center will be posted soon at the
SNARS web site, http://snars.org.
3. Following the amateur exams on February 15, we will recess to the radio
station at the V.A. for the Western Nevada Noon Net. We will then
reconvene at Classroom MG-10 for a training session regarding message
traffic handling. This will be an instructional session on how to prepare,
transmit, and otherwise handle amateur radio messages passed through the
National Traffic System (NTS). The session is expected to last
approximately two hours. This subject is of general interest to all
amateurs, but in particular this will help prepare ARES/RACES members for
Washoe County ARES' Emergency Preparedness Exercise/Competition to be held
in late February. This will be an exercise that will test participants'
emergency readiness as well as their operating skills. Details of the
exercise are still being formulated and an exact date is yet to be
determined; further information will be forthcoming soon.
