Peggy and I watched very closely from our patio. I saw what
did appear to be a puff in the con trail and when it was about
45-degrees to the east, it appeared to be a flash as well.... It
is likely that they were already into the craft experiencing a
breach of hull burn-through and once that happens, it can only
spread and get worse. When I saw the flash, I thought maybe
it was a "bounce" on the atmosphere and remembered that it
should not be that dramatic, re-entry should leave a steady
trail and that's it. But, I had thought at the time that it seemed
odd....
It is truly a sad day for our space program.

I didn't see the puff of smoke but I did see a flash of light when it was
directly overhead. It made me curious enough to go in and turn the TV on.
The NASA news release said they first noticed a low temp reading on
something at 0553 PDT that would have been before it went over here.
