Flood Watch
345 am PDT Fri Aug 1 2003

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for this
afternoon and eveningfor the following counties

In eastern California
     eastern Sierra...eastern Nevada...eastern Placer...eastern
     el Dorado...alpine and Mono

In western Nevada
     southern Washoe...Churchill...Storey...Lyon...Douglas and Mineral

A very moist and unstable air mass will create favorable conditions
for heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding this afternoon and
evening across the watch area. Showers and thunderstorms will begin
later this morning. A weak upper level disturbance will help the
showers and thunderstorms strengthen this afternoon. Locally heavy
rainfall has the potential to drop over one-half inch of rain in a
very short time. Showers and thunderstorms will continue into the
evening before dissipating overnight.

Hikers and campers should avoid dry stream beds and washes. Stay
away from narrow canyons where flood waters can become killers.
Flash floods can occur many miles from thunderstorms. Be ready to
move to higher ground if flooding is observed or a warning is
issued. Never drive across a flooded roadway.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flash floods.

Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further
details or updates.
