A reminder to all new and prospective SKYWARN spotters in the Reno Forecast
Office CWA - Basic Spotter Training will be offered this Saturday, June 8,
at the National Weather Service Office in Reno. The class will run from
1:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. The presentation includes information on what
weather conditions to watch for and report to the NWS Office during periods
of severe weather. The class wraps up with a tour of the forecasting
facilities and will end just in time for participants to observe the 4:00
P.M. radiosonde balloon launch, a detailed process combining the arts of
aeronautics as well as radio direction finding.
95% of all disasters that occur in the United States are weather related.
Although tremendous advances in technology have benefitted the accuracy of
forecasting, technology alone cannot provide all of the information needed
to completely and accurately forecast severe weather and issue appropriate
watches/warnings.
SKYWARN spotters are a vital part of the NWS's success in achieving its
goal to help protect lives through early warning.
Be a part of this important service!
