Special Weather Statement
630 am PDT Tue Jul 9 2002

...Record heat expected in the valleys of western Nevada and east
central California this week...

A strong area of high pressure will build over northern Nevada
during the next few days...producing high temperatures above 100
degrees in the valleys of western Nevada and east central
California. New daily record highs are likely to be set in Reno
beginning today...with temperatures by Wednesday and Thursday rising
close to the all time record high of 106 degrees...which occurred
in 1931 on July 20.

In the desert areas of Pershing...Churchill...and Mineral
counties...even hotter conditions are expected as highs range from
105 to 110 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.

People who will be outdoors this week should drink plenty of water
and avoid excessive activity during the warmest portions of the day.
The hot temperatures with persistent sunshine...combined with low
humidities and light winds...will increase the rate of dehydration
and raise the risk for dangerous heat related illnesses.
