Before leaving the NWS Office after the SNARS Board Meeting last night, I
stepped into the operations room to say good night to the staff on duty. I
asked when there might be more big storms moving into the area - the
unanimous answer was, "Christmas!" We talked a little bit about the
weather pattern setting up and the potential for snow on Christmas, which
was looking pretty good as we discussed it.
The weather pattern for the upcoming week was covered in more detail at
tonight's meeting of the Northern Nevada Chapter, American Meteorological
Society. Models show the current pattern remaining consistent through the
middle of next week. Northerly flow will maintain cold temperatures over
the region. The storm moving into the area on Thursday will be drier than
these past two; however, with cold air entrenched over the area, all
precipitation received in the valleys will be in the form of snow. This is
likely to mean greater accumulations at the lower elevations (in fact,
Roger shared that he told a friend in the Bay Area to expect Mt. Tamalpais
in the San Francisco area to be capped with snow on Friday morning).
Looking ahead to next week, models currently show a small disturbance being
pushed into the area on December 24 amidst a northeasterly flow. Given
these circumstance, this weather system will move into the area under
upslope conditions of the type that typically produce greater snowfall
amounts in the valleys. So...if the pattern pans out as the models are
currently indicating, we should see a couple inches of snow on Christmas Eve.
Get your shopping done early and enjoy!
