From wu4g at comcast.net Tue Sep 1 20:19:05 2020 From: wu4g at comcast.net (wu4g at comcast.net) Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2020 20:19:05 -0400 Subject: [CVCC] Announcing the W4MYA Memorial Dude-In-Chair Award Message-ID: <007201d680be$abf303a0$03d90ae0$@comcast.net> Hi All, Thanks to those who were able to make the CVCC meeting on Zoom tonight. I greatly appreciate the comments and feedback. This is to announce a new CVCC award activity that all members can participate in. Your only limitation will be your incentive and free time to operate. Doesn't matter about station size, QRP or KW, whether you chatter, paddle, or diddle, run or search and pounce, home or mobile. Only requirement is to computer log and follow the attached rules. Just get on the air when you can and have fun! Official rules below. Also attached in case formatting gets messed up through the reflector. 73 Ronnie WU4G W4MYA Memorial Dude-In-Chair Award 1. Purpose: To provide a means of rewarding CVCC members (Dudes) for the active participation in contests. 2. Time Period: Annual contest which runs January 1 - December 31 each year. For the 2020 inaugural run - September 1 - December 31. 3. Eligibility: To be a Dude, you must be a member of the CVCC. 4. Eligible Contests: Any contest that is supported by a logging program that tracks and reports operating hours in its summary results. 5. Scoring: * The Dude-In-Chair score is based on the amount of time operating in each contest as reported by logging program multiplied by the multiplier for specific contests and operations. For example if you report 9.5 hours of Op Time, you will get 9.5 Dude-In-Chair points. * For Multi-Ops each Op gets credited for the full amount of the total Op Time reported regardless of how long they operated, just so long as they made and logged contacts. If the Multi Station owner did not operate, they get credited 25% of the total Op Time reported. * For Guest Op Station the actual Op gets credited for the full amount of the total Op time reported; the Host Station owner gets credited for 25% of the total Op time reported. * Must follow rules of contest for Off-Time reporting in logging program. Editing default off-time setting in logging program is not allowed. * For all contests, minimum of 1 contact every 30 minutes please. 6. Score reporting: Only activity posted to 3830scores.com is counted. To be counted, Central Virginia Contest Club must be selected as the club. 7. Op time: Operators must fill in the "Op Time" box in 3830Scores.com. If an operator reports a contest but does not indicate an Op Time, the Op Time will default to "1". 8. Multipliers: * Any ARRL contest that includes the Club Competition has a 10X multiplier applied to the credited Dude-In-Chair points based on the scoring defined in section 4. In order to receive multiplier, participant must be a Dude that resides in the 35-mile diameter Club Circle as defined by ARRL Club Competition rules or, operates as a guest op at a club Multi effort. * VA QSO Party has a 5X multiplier * NAQP Team has a 5X multiplier. Must be part of a CVCC team, individual entries are not eligible for multiplier. 9. Reporting: A list containing each Dude's current score will be posted monthly on the CVCC reflector. Contests participated in that month may also be included. 10. Awards: * 1st Place - $50 Gift Certificate/Dinner for 2 * 2nd Place - $25 Gift Certificate/Dinner for 1 * 3rd Place - $10 Gift Certificate/Fast food From hmmjr at comcast.net Tue Sep 1 21:13:32 2020 From: hmmjr at comcast.net (HOWARD MOTLEY) Date: Tue, 1 Sep 2020 21:13:32 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [CVCC] Announcing the W4MYA Memorial Dude-In-Chair Award In-Reply-To: <007201d680be$abf303a0$03d90ae0$@comcast.net> References: <007201d680be$abf303a0$03d90ae0$@comcast.net> Message-ID: <360082002.21414.1599009212872@connect.xfinity.com> Sorry I missed the meeting. I am aware there is a drift in PC clock .Since I am not very serious about FT8 and other JT stuff I rely on Windows update that like you said is not stable. There are two time servers available time.window.com and time.nict.gov but very often the service is not available for the update. When I notice DT > 2 sec I do manual synchronize, though I don't pay attention all the time...I don't use 3rd party program to keep the time synched . 73 Sejo , N3UA ________________________________ From: WB5JJJ > Sent: Wednesday, September 2, 2020 3:33 PM To: n3ua at msn.com > Subject: FYI - Time Sync on FT8 I've noticed you on FT8 with a Band Activity window DT of -2.0s or more error rate. The maximum decode window for FT8 is 2.5s and for FT4 it's just 1.0s. The DT column should average below 0.5s, 0.3s typically. Your high DT results in fewer folks seeing your CQ's or able to complete contacts if their error is offset just 0.5s from yours. I see you mostly under the 2.5s limit, but occasionally I'll miss a decode or two that I should see. Probably because your DT is now beyond the prescribed limit. This will also cause multiple repeats of information since the other station did not decode you. If you are using the default Windows Time Sync, which happens once a week by default, this will not be stable enough for FT operations after a couple of days clock drift. You need to be using a 3rd party time sync program set to sync up no more often than every 30 minutes or so, unless your computer clock is really drifty. If you are using Dimension4 as I was, it has now been blocked from several of its time servers for anonymous connections, and the others are no longer accurate enough for FT operation. However, a small group of users are not seeing this. But it appears to be a problem in later versions of Windows 10. To check your computer clock, use the https://time.is website as a CHECK ONLY. It does NOT correct your system clock, but it will say "exact" if you are well within standard tolerances. Many have found the BktTimeSync from IZ2BKT works extremely well and will also take advantage of a $20 GPS "puck" and not use slower Internet NTP servers. Mine keeps my DT to 0.0s or 0.1s when syncing my time every 30 minutes. There are others available, it's your choice. 73's George - WB5JJJ 4 73's George - WB5JJJ 4 From kg4w at comcast.net Sun Sep 6 09:30:41 2020 From: kg4w at comcast.net (Ed Hughes) Date: Sun, 6 Sep 2020 09:30:41 -0400 Subject: [CVCC] KG4W went RTTY Message-ID: <5d0164a6-62dc-6941-4753-7a3658fdafdc@comcast.net> At 0000z Fri night there were 2 events beginning and I thought I might participate in both.
