Ed KG4W From hmmjr at comcast.net Tue Jun 2 09:05:28 2020 From: hmmjr at comcast.net (HOWARD MOTLEY) Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2020 09:05:28 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [CVCC] WPX CW - W4PM Message-ID: <2109436670.175140.1591103128592@connect.xfinity.com> I spent the weekend on the Rappahannock River in Essex County VA. Lack of space required a compromise antenna so I went with a MFJ 40/20 trap dipole installed as a sloper to the NE. It turns out the MFJ antenna should be advertised as a kit requiring a lot of user input to make it work. I figured it would take a bit of tweaking but I found it was purposely grossly mistuned on both bands by as much as 500 kHz to 1 mHz LOW. No info was received or available on line from MFJ to indicate it was made SO LONG and a lot of tuning was required. I found the info about how far off the antenna was tuned from a KE0OG YouTube video review. Having neither an antenna analyzer nor good boots to keep walking through the wetlands over which the antenna is installed I decided to leave it as it was received and try to get some sort of a match with a little 300w auto-tuner I also brought along. It did match somewhat if I limited power from my Omni D to 50 watts or less output. With a 5 or 10 or more to 1 SWR on my 50 feet of RG8x feedline I'm sure I had a significant amount of feedline losses so my ERP may well have been in QRP range. Having no computer for logging I grabbed a pen and small pad, loaded W4PM in my memory keyer and started calling the BIG guns who also had BIG ears. Each page of my pad has room for 20 contacts so as I filled up a page I QRT for a few hours to take boat rides, sit on the beach, or participate in other family activities. All told I filled up 6 pages for 120 contacts. There were a number EU contacts on both 40 and 20! I went ahead and ordered an antenna analyzer and bought some good rubber boots so I hope to try tuning that wire next weekend. That 42 ft. antenna may well be end up being 36 to 38 ft. long when I'm done. This experience has indeed reinforced my belief gained from other MFJ purchases over the years. They really should be advertised as partial kits. I'm sure this antenna will eventually work with a few hours work. 73, Puck W4PM From wu4g at comcast.net Tue Jun 2 10:20:24 2020 From: wu4g at comcast.net (wu4g at comcast.net) Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2020 14:20:24 +0000 Subject: [CVCC] CVCC not on list ! I don't think I've ever logged a contact on 15 meters What would you choose and why? All things are equal for support structure. (35' above average ground) assembly/construction isn't an issue. I enjoy it. Small lot but large enough to also support the EFHW I have that most days really booms on 20 with 100 watts. I do have amplifier but not currently configured to use it. The amplifier will eventually go into service. The choices are: MoselyTA33. Have had a pair of them for decades. Never assembly one. I hear good things. I also hear that the element spacing is a bit of a compromise. Modified hex beam. 4 spreaders 6% larger than a true hex beam and I can add 6mtrs and the WARC bands if I want to. I hear lots of hex beams on the air. They seem to have a great signal even in the 100-500 watt range. X beam. A bit larger radius than the modified hex beam. Built and used several over the years with good succes. Easy construction from the hardware store. Easy to tune. Traditional X beams are usually monoband but I thought I could add some traps and make it 10/20. ****Those proficient with modeling software please speak up!!!**** From kg4w at comcast.net Sun Jun 7 08:54:41 2020 From: kg4w at comcast.net (Ed Hughes) Date: Sun, 7 Jun 2020 08:54:41 -0400 Subject: [CVCC] We are OLD ! Our place is about 100 yards SW of the Rappahannock River (over 1 mile wide) next to a small wet lands. I have no room for an antenna even as long as a 40 meter dipole! So I tried a MFJ 40/20 trap dipole which started out at 46' long. I suspended it from an over hanging pine tree limb about 40 feet up down at about a 30 to 45 degree angle to a post driven into that wet land sloping to the NE. I tried the WPX contest but soon found the antenna was grossly mistuned 700 kHz to 1 MHz low. I did make 120 contacts - a good number from EU but with a mismatch that severe I was lucky to get any power radiated at all. > > SO this past weekend, armed with a antenna analyzer and a good pair of rubber boots, I headed back to the river to tune that antenna. I trudged through that wet land more times than I'd like to recall and had to cut a total of 4 feet off the 20 meter central section to get it resonant (0 J) at the low end of 20 meters. Even after removing that much wire it was still tuned low on 40. So I took off another 3 feet (18" per side) from the 40 meter ends. That brought it to resonance at the bottom of the 40 meter band! The antenna now covers all of the 20 meter band with less than a 2:1 SWR and on 40 meters it has a SWR band width of maybe 100 kHZ. That's good enough because that covers the CW portion of the band where I hang out! That 46' long antenna is now about 39' long! I did not get a chance to test it on the air because I forgot to take a keyer with me so I did not set the rig up. I was not going to send CW by tapping two wires together! The need for a keyer to leave at the river prompted me to get busy and build the thing. It took maybe an hour (simple job - low parts count) and it worked the first time - well maybe it was the second time. Instructions said to put in the battery and the keyer will send 73 if it is OK. Hmmmm! What did I do wrong? Looking at the tiny circuit board I noticed the 14 pin IC socket was empty! I had forgotten to plug in the IC which is the heart, soul and brains of the whole thing. Programming the memories is simple and setting up the many features to your liking is child's play. Sometimes things actually work out as planned - not always but sometimes. > > 73, > Puck W4PM > ______________________________________________________________ > CVCC mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/cvcc > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:CVCC at mailman.qth.net > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html From hmmjr at comcast.net Wed Jun 24 09:38:57 2020 From: hmmjr at comcast.net (HOWARD MOTLEY) Date: Wed, 24 Jun 2020 09:38:57 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [CVCC] Fwd: [FOC] Horesey Horsey In-Reply-To: <269152083.649.1593005420226@connect.xfinity.com> References: <269152083.649.1593005420226@connect.xfinity.com> Message-ID: <1368593827.690.1593005937908@connect.xfinity.com> > ---------- Original Message ---------- > From: HOWARD MOTLEY > To: FOC Members > Date: 06/24/2020 9:30 AM > Subject: [FOC] Horesey Horsey > > > The other day I was out riding in my car trying to forget the stay at home stuff when I spied a number of horses. My birthday was the 27th and Judy asked how I wanted to celebrate. I replied I wanted to operate in FD! No fancy party - no expensive dinner - just me and my radio. Of course Judy spent hours fixing food and drinks and home made ice cream to keep me fed and happy while I operated. She is a "GEM" of the highest possible value! CVCC members worked - KG4W -That's all folks! That was achieved in first 14:15. I spent the last 2:18 filling in contacts on 15 and 10. I was able to get 4 hours sleep and close down early to attend a meeting of volunteer organization of which I am a member. Overall good North American conditions on 80-10 meters. No luck on 160 so no effort was made there. Six may have had some action but I've worked so few stations on 15 and 10 this year I wanted to take advantage of the nice openings on those 2 bands. The temporary rule change to allow working of D stations by other D stations possibly made the 1D class the most popular this year. It was a pleasure to put the spirit of my departed good friend, the original "Dude" Bob Morris, on the air with his call W4MYA. I tried my best to " Run'em". Thanks to all the "Dudes" and "Dudettes" who called me in response to my FD calls! > 73, > Puck W4PM > > > From hmmjr at comcast.net Sun Jun 28 22:25:29 2020 From: hmmjr at comcast.net (HOWARD MOTLEY) Date: Sun, 28 Jun 2020 22:25:29 -0400 (EDT) Subject: [CVCC] A familiar face in these pics. I had a chance to dabble a bit with ops on most bands and modes, I had 162 QSOs and a score of 310 according to N1MM+. The 10 meter opening on FT8 was the highlight for me. 73 Mel WB3D On Sun, Jun 28, 2020 at 10:19 PM HOWARD MOTLEY wrote: > Here's a Summary of my FD activity this year.
